“On the Black Saturday, I woke up in the morning to the sounds of the barrages and asked my wife to turn on the television,” says Zvi Reder, an MDA EMT and volunteer ambulance from Kibbutz Sa’ad in the Sdot Negev Regional Council. “There were no news reports yet, but I realized that something unusual was happening. I have a vantage point on a roof and with binoculars facing Gaza I looked and saw the vans of the terrorists entering Israel. I dispatched the security response team, of which I\u2019m also a member, but because I\u2019m the community\u2019s ambulance driver, I decided to concentrate on saving lives. At about 7 o’clock, the wounded started coming to the community gate, without thinking twice I put on the MDA’s vest and and flak jacket and went out to them. I arrived and saw several wounded, most of them young men from the party in Re\u2019im. I performed an initial triage in order to assess the severity of their injuries and at the same time I informed the Negev dispatch center that I was beginning evacuation to the hospital and that they should be prepared for my arrival. In retrospect, I realized that the entire route I was traveling on was full of terrorists. Only after I arrived at the hospital did I realize that my son was missing and that I had had no communication with him, at 11 in the morning he wrote that he could not speak and that there was a noise outside. About an hour later, his brother called him and a terrorist answered him in Arabic.”<\/p>\n
When I got up from the Shiva, I went to the funeral of the MDA volunteer Yarin Peled Z\u201dL. It was important to me to attend her funeral. I also knew Yarin as an MDA volunteer, but also from the military intensive care unit, the integration of her military service was part of it, and we hosted them at our house for huge meals quite a few times. At the funeral, I realized what a supportive family the MDA family is. I ask everyone to raise their heads, we are the spirit of the fighters at the front, Am Yisrael Chai.”<\/p>\n
